Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh 40th Annivarsary
It’s not easy acting like a kid into your 40s. But if anyone can
do it, it’s the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh.
When it began in the basement of the old Alleghency Post Office on the
North Side in 1983, the world was very different. Admission was $1.50 (!).
You needed an arcade and infinite quarters to master a video game. On a
quiet night in the summer, you could hear the distractive roar of a crowd
that knew what World Series-caliber baseball looked like.
Now the Children’s Museum features the largest cultural campus for kids in
the country, and was recently ranked #2 in USA Today 10Best’s “10 Best
Children’s Museums in the U.S.” The museum expects an astounding
350,000 visitors vext year. They currently have original traveling exhibits —
created in Pittsburgh — that are on display in 20 different states. New additions
like Museum Lab are exploring ways to engage older kids.
We helped them put on a party for the ages – the exact day of their 40th
Anniversary – which featured a gigantic, five foot long cake from Pittsburgh’s
legendary Prantl’s Bakery and a special $1.50 throwback entrance price.
It was swarmed with kids in party hats, their parents and the media all day.
