When the pandemic hit, Klavon’s Ice Cream Parlor was suddenly shuttered with no way to support its employees.
Food delivery was still allowed, however, and they had the recipe to make people happy—plenty of the best ice cream made anywhere.
Conferring with owner Jacob Hanchar, we imagined the concept of “ice cream survival kits” that could help families through the worst of quarantine isolation and bring a small measure of happiness in the darkest of times. They could be delivered to people’s homes, complete with a supply of cones and sprinkles.
The community ate it up. Literally. The first 300 gallon-size tubs of chocolate and vanilla, with 10 cones and toppings, sold out in the first 24 hours. Soon, a full range of flavors was quickly added. Klavon’s staff was able to keep working, and many Pittsburghers had their days brightened considerably.
